Who uses payphones anymore? With today’s infinitely uninterrupted network of connection, it’s hard to even remember a time when reaching someone’s ear meant finding a street corner and pilfering our clinking stash of pocket tender. Like many items before it, a once necessary and banal bit of common life has started on its path to archeological relic, pausing here to ponder its reflection as ART. I am enamored with transformation and illusion and letting art be discovered and to that end, I seek out ways to recycle familiar household objects into over-sized icons of childhood and history. If you look closely at the illuminated ‘instructions plate’, a directive for living in this noisily connected world is exposed.
